Her personal style, vitality and unique approach to cooking have landed her on the pages of Cosmopolitan, Vogue, Kiplinger's, Entrepreneur and other national publications. Lorena hosts regular cooking segments on both Univisión and Telemundo television networks. Lorena's "Big Chef, Little Chef" program, designed to teach children and their parents how to plan and prepare nutritious meals, has been reported on by hundreds of media outlets across the U.S. and Latin America. FORWARD-Adelante recently had the opportunity to catch up with the widely successful and busy entrepreneur, Lorena García, to ask her a few questions. FA: What are you most passionate about? Lorena: There are many things I am passionate about but the one that stands out is food. I love using food as a vehicle to share and transmit love to my family, friends, and all the wonderful people that watch what I do. FA: Some refer to you as the "Latina version of Martha Stewart", is that accurate? Lorena: While I believe it is a huge compliment to be named in the same sentence as Martha Stewart, I believe that I'm the authentic version of "Lorena Garcia." I believe that I can only be me. FA: Was there a significant moment that inspired your career path? Lorena: When I realized that I could make a living doing what I loved here in the United States and that I could be educated with the tools I would need, I knew I had found my career path. I knew I could take the passion that I have for cooking to the next level and I was ready. FA: What has been your proudest career achievement? Lorena: There are many, many achievements I'm proud of but there are three that really stand out for me. Opening a restaurant entirely on my own was the first real achievement for me. Creating and producing a cooking show was also extremely significant for me. Finally, developing my lifestyle collection with Belk has been an amazing experience and achievement. FA: From a business perspective, what was your worst mistake or failure and how did you fix it? Lorena: Thank God I haven't had any major mistakes on TV, but when minor gaffes have occurred I've thankfully been prepared with back ups. I don't believe it is how a person falls but how graciously they get back up. FA: You make it look so easy, but many successful entrepreneurs have had to face a major struggle in their lives to get where they are. What was your biggest challenge? Lorena: My biggest challenge has been overcoming the fear of failure as an entrepreneur and getting comfortable with taking risks, since there are no guarantees for success. FA: What has been for you the most effective method for maintaining strong relationships with your customers? Lorena: I develop personal relationships based on honesty, sincerity and love. I try to always make my customers feel special because when people come and pay to eat food from my restaurant or watch me on TV, it is an honor and I respect that. FA: Is your family involved in your business? Lorena: No, not really but they definitely enjoy the benefits of my career, especially on holidays and special occasions! FA: What's your favorite quote? Lorena: Something I always say is, "Simplify, Focus and Execute." Accomplishing a goal is easier by using that formula. If you want to become the best writer or painter, for example, begin by simplifying the idea and maybe creating a painting in your room. Then by focusing on painting and taking small action steps, you will be able to achieve your goals and dreams more easily because you will see the path to get there. When goals are small they are easier to reach. Many people don't apply this formula and get overwhelmed by the vastness of their dreams. -----(Español)----- Nacida en Venezuela, Chef Lorena García se graduó de la renombrada Universidad de Arte Culinario Johnson & Wales. Lorena regularmente anfitriona segmentos de cocina en las cadenas de televisión Univisión y Telemundo. Lorena: Hay muchas cosas que me apasionan, pero lo que se destaca es la comida. Me encanta usar los alimentos como un vehículo para compartir y transmitir el amor a mi familia, amigos y toda la gente maravillosa que ven lo que hago. FA: Algunos se refieren a tí como la "versión latina de Martha Stewart", es esto cierto? Lorena: Si bien creo que es un gran cumplido ser nombrada entre la misma frase con Martha Stewart, pero soy la versión auténtica de "Lorena García." Creo que sólo puedo ser yo misma. FA: ¿Hubo un momento significativo que inspiró tu carrera? Lorena: Cuando me dí cuenta que podía ganarme la vida haciendo lo que me gustaba hacer aquí en los Estados Unidos y que podía ser educada y aprender a utilizar las herramientas que se necesitaban, yo sabía que había encontrado mi carrera. Al saber que podía continuar con mi pasión para cocinar y llevarla a un nivel mas alto, ya estaba lista. FA: ¿Cuál ha sido el logro de más orgullo de tu carrera? Lorena: Hay muchos, muchos logros de los que estoy orgullosa, pero hay tres que realmente predominan en mí. La apertura de un restaurante por mi cuenta fue totalmente el logro primordial para mí. La creación y producción de un programa de cocina fue también muy importante. Por último, el desarrollo de mi colección de estilos para la casa con Belk ha sido una experiencia increíble y de tremendos logros. FA: Desde una perspectiva empresarial, ¿cuál fue tu peor error o fracaso y cómo lo solucionaste? Lorena: Gracias a Dios no he cometido ningún error importante en la televisión, pero cuando las metidas de patas de menor importancia han ocurrido, gracias a Dios que he estado preparada con libretos para ayudarme. No creo que se trata de cómo una persona se cae sino cómo se levanta con gracia. FA: Haces que parezca tan fácil, pero muchos empresarios exitosos han tenido que enfrentar una lucha fuerte en sus vidas para llegar a donde están. ¿Cuál fué tu mayor reto? Lorena: Mi mayor desafío ha sido superar el miedo al fracaso como empresaria y conseguir tranquilidad al asumir riesgos, ya que no existen garantías de éxito. FA: ¿Cuál ha sido para ti el método más eficaz para el mantenimiento de relaciones sólidas con tus clientes? Lorena: Desarrollo relaciones personales basadas en la honestidad, sinceridad y amor. Siempre trato de hacer que mis clientes se sientan especiales, porque cuando la gente viene y paga por comer en mi restaurante o me ven en televisión, es un honor para mí y lo respeto. FA: ¿Tus familiares participan en tu negocio? Lorena: No, no realmente, pero definitivamente disfrutan de los beneficios de mi carrera, sobre todo en días festivos y ocasiones especiales! FA: ¿Cuál es tu lema favorito? Lorena: Algo que siempre digo es, "Simplificar, enfocar y ejecutar". Implementación de un objetivo es más fácil mediante el uso de esa fórmula. Por ejemplo, si deseas convertirte en el mejor escritor o pintor, comienza por la simplificación de la idea creando una pintura en tu habitación. Entonces, centrándote en la pintura vas adoptando medidas de acciones pequeñas, serás capaz de alcanzar tus metas y sueños más fácilmente, porque podrás ver el camino para llegar allí. Cuando las metas son pequeñas son más fáciles de alcanzar. Muchas personas no se aplican esta fórmula y se dejan confundir por la inmensidad de sus sueños.
